The Mariners had been rumored to be considering a trade of closer David Aardsma, but that’s probably history now.
The club announced that Aardsma will have surgery on his left hip. The surgery, to repair a tear in the labrum of his left hip, was scheduled to be performed in Vail, Colo. on Jan. 3 by Dr. Marc Phillipon.
Aardsma was mostly healthy in 2010, but the club said he has been bothered by the hip in the almost three months since the season ended. The team’s medical director, Dr. Edward Khalfayan, met with Aardsma, trainer Rick Griffin and Dr. Phillipon.
The plan is for Aardsma to be able to resume throwing in about four weeks, meaning he will be behind the other pitchers when spring training starts in mid-February, but he should be ready to go come Opening Day.
